Keeping up with the Kardashians/Jenners/Wests is harder than ever before, with all of their clothing and makeup lines, music and well, dramas. After the more recent news about the Jenners, today it is Kanye West’s turn to hit the headlines, as he has been tapped along with Joan Smalls and other A-list models to front Balmain’s fall 2016 ad campaign, once again.
Captured by Steven Klein and directed by Pascal Dangin, the Balmain fall/winter 2016 ad campaign features (as of now) only a couple of dramatic, almost theatrical pictures, unveiled by the French fashion house via Instagram. Well-balanced and almost multidimensional thanks to Steven Klein’s terrific skills when it comes to low-motion effects and lights, the images are surely destined to make history in the world of fashion photography.
West, who unlike his first campaign with Balmain is not posing along with his wife Kim Kardashian, is seen wearing the custom beaded-jacket he wore to this 2016 Met Gala, as well as a pair of heavily shredded jeans (which at this point could be regarded as his favorite staple). Puerto Rican model Joan Smalls, on the other hand, ethereally channels a pair of high-waisted billowy pants with ruffles, along with a matching, lightweight long-sleeved top.
Described by Balmain’s creative director Olivier Rousteing on Instagram with the intriguing caption “music meets fashion”, the Balmain fall 2016 ad campaign transcends mere fashion, intertwining art and music together. While West represents music, Smalls is here to depict the power of fashion, and their poses figuratively embody the incredible interconnection and inspiring results such forms of art create when working together.
It is no secret that Olivier Rousteing is often carried away by music when designing and showcasing his collections, as proven most recently by his Balmain x H&M runaway show, where he asked the Backstreet Boys to perform their best hits from the Nineties.
As for the campaign itself, creative director Pascal Dangin revealed more pictures are about to come, and many are already speculating about whether West is going to be featured in all of them or not. The pictures of Josephine Skriver, Sasha Luss and Dilone are equally solemn, dramatic and mystique, coming in the same black and white format and picturing some with teardrops in their eyes.Although Olivier Rousteing is a close friend of the Kardashian/Jenner/West clan (the Jenner sisters posed as brand ambassadors for the Balmain fall 2015 campaign too), the fashion house has just released a couple of short videos for the campaign, and none of them features the rapper-turned-designer Kanye West.
Is Olivier Rousteing about to tap an iconic squad of A-list musicians and models? We guess we just have to stay tuned to get an answer! As of now, we continue discovering new A-list models join the #BalmainArmy for the fall campaign!
